Ju n 20 14 BLOCK PARTITIONS OF SEQUENCES

Given a sequence A = (a1, . . . , an) of real numbers, a block B of the A is either a set B = {ai, ai+1, . . . , aj} where i ≤ j or the empty set. The size b of a block B is the sum of its elements. We show that when each ai ∈ [0, 1] and k is a positive integer, there is a partition of A into k blocks B1, . . . , Bk with |bi − bj| ≤ 1 for every i, j. We extend this result in several directions.

Balanced partitions of vector sequences

Let d, r ∈ N and ‖ · ‖ be any norm on Rd . Let B denote the unit ball with respect to this norm. We show that any sequence v1, v2, . . . of vectors in B can be partitioned into r subsequences V1, . . ., Vr in a balanced manner with respect to the partial sums: For all n ∈ N, r , we have ‖∑i k,vi∈V vi − r ∑i k vi‖ 2.0005d. A similar bound holds for partitioning sequences of vector sets. Both res...

Core partitions and block coverings

A number of new results about core partitions have been proved recently. ([2],[3], [9], [12]) For s ∈ N an s-core is by definition an integer partition without hooks of length s. This type of partitions first occurred in modular representation theory of symmetric groups, where s-cores label s-blocks of defect 0 in the case where s is a prime. In the study of relations between blocks for differe...

Distinct Parts Partitions without Sequences

Partitions without sequences of consecutive integers as parts have been studied recently by many authors, including Andrews, Holroyd, Liggett, and Romik, among others. Their results include a description of combinatorial properties, hypergeometric representations for the generating functions, and asymptotic formulas for the enumeration functions. We complete a similar investigation of partition...

Block inclusions and cores of partitions

Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for an s-block of integer partitions to be contained in a t-block. The generating function for such partitions is found analytically, and also bijectively, using the notion of an (s, t)-abacus. The largest partition which is both an s-core and a t-core is explicitly given.
